Spain’s AENOR standards bureau has awarded its first-ever certificate for a reduction of CO2 emissions to Iberia Airlines. The certificate attests to the reduction of emissions on the Spanish flag carrier’s walk-on air shuttle service between Madrid and Barcelona, thanks to the application of measures to improve efficiency.

Iberia slashed the volume of greenhouse gas emissions on the shuttle by replacing its Boeing 757s and McDonnell Douglas 87s and 88s with new Airbus A319s, A320s and A321s, and by installing lighter ergonomic seats in the cabins.

This led to a reduction by 12,124 tonnes of the CO2 that would have been emitted without these changes. The savings in aviation fuel, Iberia says, would power 1,500 Madrid-Barcelona flights or 75 flights between Madrid and New York.

Iberia’s president, Fernando Conte, was handed the certificate by the AENOR president, Manuel Lopez Cachero, at a ceremony held at the airline’s Madrid headquarters.

Using a methodology proposed by Iberia and data supplied by a number of company departments, AENOR’s Climate Change Unit validated and verified the reduction, determining that the changes were indeed due to the measures cited. The bureau will now perform annual verifications.
