The Austrian Airlines Group announced it is increasing its fuel surcharge for short- and medium-haul flights from the current level of EUR17 to EUR21. Fuel surcharges on long-haul routes will also be increased, from EUR77 to EUR82. These new charges apply to all tickets for flights operated by the Austrian Airlines Group sold or issued from 20-May-08 onwards.

Austrian Airlines confirmed talks have collapsed with Saudi Arabian investor, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber (AFP, 13-May-08). Al Jaber was planning to take a 20% stake in the airline via a capital increase at EUR7.10/share, equating to an investment of EUR150 million.

(XFN Asia) Austrian Airlines’ pursuit of a financial investor does not exclude the possibility of a strategic partnership with another carrier in the future, CEO, Alfred Oetsch, told the Austrian state broadcaster, ORF, in a radio interview.

Austrian Finance Minister, Wilhelm Molterer, stated Austrian Airlines should remain an independent carrier (Reuters, 08-May-08). Saudi-Austrian investor, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa al Jaber, was to take a 20% stake in the airline via a capital increase at EUR7.10/share, equating to an investment of EUR150 million.

Austrian Airlines announced that at the Ordinary Meeting of Shareholders, to be held on 07-May-08, a new member nominated by investor, Al Jaber, will be elected into the Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines AG. The new man on the Supervisory Board will be, Herr Klaus Edelhauser.

BBA Aviation Engine Repair and Overhaul Company, Dallas Airmotive, has signed an exclusive, long-term maintenance contract with Austrian Airlines for maintenance, repair and overhaul of the airline’s Rolls-Royce Tay engines.

Commenting on the latest traffic results, Austrian Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Ãtsch, said the following “Even in the traditionally weak first quarter, we were able to achieve an increase of 2.0%, taking us to an approximate total of 2.3 million passengers carried. This strong traffic result is based first and foremost on continuing strong growth in the short- and medium-haul segment, above all in the Focus East regions, where we succeeded in recording a 7% increase in passenger volume in the first quarter of 2008.

Austrian Airlines announced plans to open its first Customer Service Centre in L’viv at the end of Apr-08. The announcement reinforces Austrian Airlines’ emphasis on expansion of its Focus East strategy.

Austrian Airlines celebrated its 50th year of operations on 31-Mar-08. To celebrate the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first Austrian Airlines scheduled flight, the company has launched services using one of its aircraft in a design dating back to the 1950s. The Austrian Airbus A320 now appears in the same design as the first aircraft ever flown by Austrian Airlines, the Vickers Viscount 779 from Vienna to London, from 1958.

Austrian Airlines announced it is expanding its services in the Summer Schedule 2008, effective from 30-Mar-08, with the addition of five new routes to the cities of Sochi and Nizhny Novgorod in Russia, Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and Baia Mare in Romania. The route network expansion will be complemented by frequency increases to 39 existing destinations in the short-, medium- and long-haul routes.
