IRELAND : Aer Lingus is to increase its long haul fuel surcharge on routes to the US, effective from 14-May-08. The increase is as a direct result of the record upsurge in the price of oil in recent weeks and the airline's rising fuel bill. No fuel surcharge is applied on any of the 82 short haul routes operated by Aer Lingus.

Icelandair commemorated its first flight between Iceland and Toronto on 2-May-08. With up to five flights weekly, this service marks the extension of Icelandair's service into Canada under the Open Skies agreement between the Canadian government and Iceland.

UNITED KINGDOM : Jet2.com and Jet2holidays.com confirmed that they will commence the first ever transatlantic flights to New York, from Leeds Bradford Airport. Jet2.com will have New York flights on sale from GBP579.98 including taxes. Jet2holidays.com will offer four-day Christmas shopping breaks direct from Leeds Bradford to Newark Airport from GBP699.

SAS announced plans to add a fuel surcharge on domestic and European services, effective immediately, to mitigate rising fuel costs (Reuters, 07-May-08). SAS will add a EUR10 charge to domestic services in Sweden and Denmark and an EUR8 charge on services to Norway. On other European services, a EUR15 charge will be implemented.

easyJet CEO, Andy Harrison, has predicted Europe’s weaker carriers will “downsize and disappear”, as the “laws of the jungle” play out under extreme fuel prices and continued expansion by the leading LCCs. Mr Harrison stated airlines that operate older, less fuel-efficient fleets and have higher cost bases are vulnerable.
