The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] delivered Europe's first two Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range) airplanes to GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) and its leasing customer, Spanish carrier Futura International Airways, based in Palma de Mallorca.

Traffic rose by 2.6% on capacity up by 5.4%, with Apr-08 being the first month of the launch of the Summer program. The load factor stood at 80.0% (-2.3 points). The group carried 6.4 million passengers (+1.5%).

SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, signed a SkyTeam Alliance Associate Adherence Agreement (SAAAA) agreement with the Romanian airline TAROM, indicating the airline is on the track to join the alliance as an Associate airline.

Lufthansa stated it would consider acquiring Austrian Airlines if Austrian signalled its interest in the deal (Financial Times Deutschland, 06-May-08). Saudi investor, Scheikh Mohammed Bin Issa Al Jaber announced he is withdrawing plans to acquire a 20% stake in the partly state-owned Austrian carrier, which has stated it would seek alternative investment partners.

Despite booming traffic through its Vienna hub, Austrian Airlines is suffering a similar fate to many smaller legacy airlines. It is losing a lot of money EUR60 million in 2007 and probably more in recent months, as fuel prices surge.

Silverjet announced that on 02-May-08, it entered into both a Subscription Agreement and a Loan Facility Agreement with Viceroy Holdings LLC, which is affiliated with Viceroy Fund, an international development fund based in the USA and UAE, details of which are set out below.

Silverjet announced its passenger and traffic statistics for April 2008, with revenue seats totaling 10,594, up from 3,452 in April 2007, and against seat availability of 15,900. Silverjet also reported Apr-08 load factor of 67%, against 61.6% in 2007.

Gate Gourmet has agreed to purchase airline catering units in five German cities from Air Berlin and SCK Sky Catering Kitchen. In addition, Air Berlin has agreed to a new long-term catering contract with Gate Gourmet in Germany and the rest of Europe.

Budapest Airport’s (BA) growing network is expanding with a new destination, as Smart Wings launches a direct air link between Budapest and Dubai from 14 May. The airline will fly once a week between Dubai and Budapest, every Wednesday at 14:15 with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Flybaboo took delivery of its first E-190 on 30-Apr-08. The Geneva-based carrier, which previously operated a dedicated turboprop fleet, operates the aircraft under a leasing agreement with M1 Travel Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lebanon's M1 Group.
