The European Commission decided today not to raise any objections to Finland's plan to support infrastructure investments in Vaasa regional airport. The total amount of public financing will amount up to three million euros.

As Iraq is increasingly opening up to civil aviation, demand for flights to the country is growing. Lufthansa is therefore examining the possibility of launching several new services to Iraq and is currently planning to serve the capital, Baghdad, and the city of Erbil in Northern Iraq from Frankfurt and Munich.

A new law that makes shining a light or laser at an aircraft a specific criminal offence has been introduced. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which initiated the new law, said it was in response to the growing number of incidents involving laser devices being shone at airliners and helicopters near British airports.

Virgin Atlantic Airways, has bought six A330-300 long-range aircraft from Airbus, and is leasing a further four from AerCap. The contract was formally completed on December 30th, 2009, following an initial announcement earlier in June.

The Association of European Airlines, representing Europe’s most important network carriers, has expanded its membership to 36 from the beginning of January, with the addition of Aegean Airlines, Air Baltic and Montenegro Airlines.
