Emergency measures following December 25th incident must be superseded by cohesive policy to maximise security, minimise passenger inconvenience. At the 7th January meeting of the EU’s Aviation Security Committee, European airlines had the opportunity to debate with EU and US regulators on the emergency security measures imposed and proposed in the wake of the Christmas Day attack on an Amsterdam-Detroit flight.

About two weeks ago, the government withdrew the draft amendments to the Aviation Law from the parliamentary proceedings, informing that a revision should be expected. Currently, the document is being worked on at the CAO and the Ministry of Infrastructure. Yesterday (16th December 2009), it was reported on the CAO's website that consultations had started on the principles of an airport fees regulation system at Polish airports. These consultations will continue until 8 January 2010. In the meantime, the airline industry is alerting on the consequences of the changes in law as proposed by the government.

GERMANY : SR Technics and Air Berlin have signed a ten-year engine maintenance contract. The contract covers a significant part of the engines on Air Berlin’s fleet of about 55 Airbus A320 Family, 13 Airbus A330 and about 55 Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft.

HUNGARY : After a break of nearly two decades, at 2.15 pm on 14 December 2009 a Malév aircraft landed again at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The Hungarian carrier is providing a daily air link between the Hungarian and Serbian capitals with connections through its network to 60 European and Middle Eastern destinations. Malév expects the launch of the new service to result in an increase in the number of transit travellers and passengers coming to Hungary on tourism and business. Return tickets for 15 Malév destinations can be purchased for an introductory unique price starting from €1 (without taxes).

Swiss WorldCargo has announced the launch of direct flights between Zurich and San Francisco, effective 2 June 2010. The cargo division of SWISS will operate a six-times-weekly service with wide-bodied A340-300 aircraft, effectively doubling cargo capacity to and from the region in which SWISS already serves Los Angeles.
