Overview - Jet2

Jet2 – consolidating its position in the UK’s north

The results posted by Jet2 make a compelling argument for finding an underserved niche and dedicating all resources and attention on it, not removing focus to pursue possibilities in more glamorous arenas.

With seemingly every European LCC trying to establish a presence in London, or offer services aimed at appealing to the business passenger, Jet2 has stuck to its original goal. CEO Philip Meeson says: “Our aim is to be the number one airline for leisure travellers in the north.”

The carrier, which began operations Apr-03 with two aircraft flying from its hub at Leeds-Bradford, now has bases scattered throughout the northern regions of the UK. It serves traditional Mediterranean/Canary Island holiday spots from Leeds-Bradford, where it offers 22 destinations, next biggest base Manchester (17), Belfast, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Sep-05 addition Blackpool.

The public’s response has been enthusiastic and the LCC, owned by the Dart Group, has achieved steady profits, even as it has added aircraft (including three B757s to reduce unit costs and increase range on its most densely travelled routes out of Leeds), destinations and bases. The carrier’s focus on its core proposition, with good ancillary revenues from car, hotel and even villa rental tie-ins, has been key to its success.

Outlook mostly positive, but competitive pressures inevitable

Jet2 has become a force at Leeds-Bradford, which it was the first to recognise as a prime LCC base, and it will be tough to dislodge it; Blackpool is another shrewd base. However, the carrier is bound to run up against the LCC majors at Manchester, Newcastle and even Belfast. The type of competition it will face is not easily won and a tactical retreat might be on the cards.
