In a Board of Directors meeting held at TAM's headquarters (Bovespa: TAMM4 and NYSE: TAM) today in Sao Paulo, resignation letters were received from board members Pedro Pullen Parente and Adalberto de Moraes Schettert.

The swine flu outbreak has raised fresh uncertainty about the outlook for the beleaguered global aviation industry. Prior to this latest threat to industry stability, airline CEOs had become somewhat more optimistic regarding the outlook for profitability and traffic over the next 12 months, according to an IATA survey. And as tracked by The Centre, several CEOs had noted a bottoming of demand and the first signs of a recovery. But many others remain unconvinced.

The Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon, has appointed Dame Deirdre Hutton CBE as Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) after an open competition. She is the first woman appointed to the post. She will take up the position in Aug-09 when the term of office of the present Chairman, Sir Roy McNulty, comes to an end after eight years of distinguished service. She will sit on the Board of the Authority during the intervening period.

SPAIN : Following the opening of their UK Sales office in May-08, Air Europa has now appointed Elizabeth Wilson as Sales Manager responsible for the development of relationships with the UK travel-trade.

IRELAND : The Chairman of Aer Arann, Padraig O’Ceidigh, has announced the appointment of Paul Schütz as the airline’s Chief Executive Designate. He will take over as Chief Executive on 01-Jan-09, and on the same day Aer Arann’s current CEO, Garry Cullen, will become a non executive Board Director.

GERMANY : Air Berlin announced that, Stefan Magiera, is the Bangkok-based general manager running the activities of the Air Berlin Group (including LTU and Belair) in Thailand. In this newly created post, Magiera will report directly to Thorsten Scherzer, Divisional Director for Sales Management at Air Berlin. Stefan Magiera possesses extensive experience in the tourist industry. The companies for which he has worked for in the past includ Hapag-Lloyd Business Travel and Düsseldorf Airport, as well as Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine. From 2004 to 2006, Magiera was Head of Corporate Sales at Air Berlin and responsible for the corporate accounts sector. His most recent job was as Head of the sales team at Germanwings.

UNITED KINGDOM : Virgin Atlantic Airways has appointed Michael Burke as the new General Manager India. Prior to this, Burke served as the Country Manager, Virgin Atlantic Airways in China. Burke has been with Virgin Atlantic for 13 years.

IRELAND : Ryanair announced the appointment of Ms Bridget Dowling as Sales and Marketing Manager for the UK and Ireland. Dowling, who was previously the carrier's Sales Manager for Southern Europe, will now assume overall responsibility for the Company’s Sales and Marketing activities in the UK and Ireland.
