Fulfilling commitments undertaken in 2009, Malév has successfully implemented simplification of its fleet to two types. In the course of consolidating the fleet we have withdrawn our five Fokker 70s from service and will be gradually returning them to the owner, AWAS Leasing Company. Thus this year Malév will be operating with a fleet comprising just two types: 18 Boeing 737 NGs and 4 Bombardier Q-400s carrying out regional services. This simplified fleet structure means a significant reduction in our company's maintenance and operational costs, the positive impacts of which will be apparent even in 2010, said Martin Gauss, the airline's CEO.

The recently-finalised AEA 2010 traffic data pain a bleak picture of a difficult year. Only three member airlines posted increases in passenger boardings for the year and one Turkish Airlines stood out with a 12.3% growth. In the process, the airline moved from seventh to fourth place among AEA members, ranked by passengers carried.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index™ (LEI) for the Euro Area increased 0.9 percent in December to 106.6 (2004 = 100), following a 0.6 percent increase in November and a 0.4 percent increase in October. Six of the eight components contributed positively to the index this month. However, its six-month growth rate has been slowing since September.

About two weeks ago, the government withdrew the draft amendments to the Aviation Law from the parliamentary proceedings, informing that a revision should be expected. Currently, the document is being worked on at the CAO and the Ministry of Infrastructure. Yesterday (16th December 2009), it was reported on the CAO's website that consultations had started on the principles of an airport fees regulation system at Polish airports. These consultations will continue until 8 January 2010. In the meantime, the airline industry is alerting on the consequences of the changes in law as proposed by the government.

SR Technics and Air Berlin have signed a ten-year engine maintenance contract. The contract covers a significant part of the engines on Air Berlin’s fleet of about 55 Airbus A320 Family, 13 Airbus A330 and about 55 Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft.

After a break of nearly two decades, at 2.15 pm on 14 December 2009 a Malév aircraft landed again at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The Hungarian carrier is providing a daily air link between the Hungarian and Serbian capitals with connections through its network to 60 European and Middle Eastern destinations. Malév expects the launch of the new service to result in an increase in the number of transit travellers and passengers coming to Hungary on tourism and business. Return tickets for 15 Malév destinations can be purchased for an introductory unique price starting from €1 (without taxes).

Swiss WorldCargo has announced the launch of direct flights between Zurich and San Francisco, effective 2 June 2010. Fraport AG and airline representatives have agreed on the future schedule of airport charges at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) during a hearing held by the Hesse economics ministry. The Association of European Airlines, representing Europe’s most important network carriers, has applauded a decision of the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) not to implement a 10% increase in the fees they charge for the inspection of arriving aircraft and passengers. AEA airlines were charged more than $65 million for these inspections in 2008.

From November 24, Finnair will use Terminal 5 at Stockholm's Arlanda Airport. At the same time, other oneworld airlines flying to Stockholm - British Airways, Iberia and Malev - will also move to the more modern, more spacious terminal. Air Saint Pierre took delivery today of the first ATR 42-500 that will be operated in the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. The aircraft, ordered in 2008 by SAEMAI (Société Anonyme d’Economie Mixte Aéronautique des Iles/Mixed Business Aeronautical Company of the Islands) is equipped with new PW 127M engines and will replace the ATR 42-320 which has been operated by the company for the last 15 years.

Before being loaded in Hahn, the generator was transported by ship from Rotterdam to Longuich on the Moselle River and from there it was brought to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport by a heavy load transport vehicle. In order to transport the entire gas power plant (built by the Alstom company) to Armenia, a total of six flights are required, all of which are to take off from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. Four of the six flights have already been completed with the Antonov 225's 'little sister', the Antonov 124. Since May 2005, this aircraft has already taken off from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport 400 times. The fifth flight took off today with the Antonov 225, which can carry very heavy loads weighing up to 250 tonnes. The final cargo item, a transformer, will also be flown to Yerevan with the Antonov 225 in the next few days.

Augsburg Premium AEROTEC today has begun the construction of the new 25,000 m² hangar, which will be the manufacturing plant for fiber composite components of the new Airbus A350 XWB. The last weeks already have seen the delivery of about 20 truck loads of steel to the site of the new factory, just westerly of the Impuls Arena. The shell of the building is due to be completed by the beginning of November. Premium AEROTEC is the largest aerostructures supplier for the new Airbus A350 XWB. The total investment for this new long-haul aircraft will amount to approximately €360 million between 2009 and 2011 at the Premium AEROTEC sites.

Finnair's scheduled traffic declined in July by nearly seven per cent and passenger numbers were around three per cent lower than in July 2008. Capacity was cut by nearly nine per cent, which meant that passenger load factor rose to 81 per cent. We have managed to adjust our capacity to correspond to lower demand, which has improved the passenger load factor.
