Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline today (11th August) announced a 3-times-a-week service from Ireland West Knock to Leeds Bradford Airport. The new route will commence on the 30th March 2010 and it will compliment Ryanair’s existing network of routes at Ireland West Knock which include daily scheduled services to London Luton, London Stansted and Liverpool John Lennon airports in addition to the four-times-a-week services to East Midlands and Bristol International and the recently commenced twice weekly service to Alicante which commenced in June.

The impact of the global downturn on the aviation industry continues to be felt with no sign of an upturn yet. Figures for traffic passing through Irish controlled airspace in July show another month of decline on the same month last year. These figures, as detailed below, come just a few days after the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced international scheduled traffic results for June showing passenger demand declined 7.2% compared with June 2008 while freight demand was down 16.5%.

ABTA is calling on families to write to their MPs and sign up to an online petition to stop the Government increasing the already heavy tax burden on families as they head off for their well earned summer holidays. From 1 November 2009 the Government is intending to raise Air Passenger Duty so that a family of four flying to Florida will pay £180 in tax and a whopping £240 next year when the aviation poll tax is set to rise again. The UK Government is the only one in the world to tax air passengers in this way and these rises will hit families particularly hard as they struggle with the impact of the recession.

In July 2009, passenger capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres, was 2.7 per cent below July 2008. Traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres, rose by 1.0 per cent. This resulted in a passenger load factor increase of 3.1 points versus last year, to 84.6 per cent. Traffic comprised an 11.0 per cent decrease in premium traffic and a 3.5 per cent increase in non-premium traffic.

Ryanair, the World’s favourite airline, today (30 July) announced 20% flight cuts at its Dublin base for the coming winter schedule (09/10). Compared to winter 2008/09, when Ryanair based 18 aircraft, and operated 1,200 weekly flights, Ryanair’s Dublin schedule this winter will be cut by 22% to 14 based aircraft with 20% fewer flights at less than 1,000 each week. Ryanair estimates that its Dublin traffic this winter will decline by a further 250,000 passengers compared to last winter’s figures, as Dublin Airport loses over 2m passengers overall in 2009.
